Overview

As Austin's first dedicated pediatric hospital, Dell Children’s Medical Center has dramatically expanded specialty care, ensuring children receive life-saving treatments close to home.

Impact

Families across 46 Central Texas counties can now access top-tier care from some of the world's best physicians without traveling or leaving their support systems.

Where We Started

Access to world-class pediatric care is life-changing for families facing serious medical conditions. Since 2007, the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation has invested over $62 million to make outstanding specialty care available close to home through Dell Children’s Medical Center.

What We Did

Dell Children’s Medical Center is Austin’s first dedicated pediatric hospital and the region’s only pediatric Level 1 Trauma Center. It offers the largest range of pediatric specialty programs and procedures in Central Texas.

As the area continues to grow, Dell Children’s Medical Center has expanded to meet the need by:

  • Bringing in over 270 pediatric specialists who offer life-saving care in 39 areas like heart, brain, spine, and fetal care.
  • Launching the region’s only Level 4 epilepsy center, providing patients with the highest level of diagnostic care and cutting-edge treatments.
  • Opening a second campus in 2023, which in just one year treated over 15,500 emergency patients and performed more than 1,100 surgeries.
How It Helped

In less than two decades, Dell Children’s Medical Center has transformed the health and well-being of thousands of children and gained worldwide recognition, including these milestones:

  • The Comprehensive Fetal Care Center performed its first fetal surgery in December 2021, saving the lives of two babies with twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome.
  • The pediatric cardiology teams at Dell Children’s Medical Center and Dell Medical School have completed 38 heart transplants in five years, including one of only seven partial heart transplants ever done in children.
  • In 2024, Dell Children’s Medical Center was the only hospital in Austin to be recognized by the U.S. News and World Report as a “Best Children’s Hospital” in six specialties.
