Where We Started

Greater Austin’s rapid population growth highlighted critical gaps in health care access, research, and innovation. In response, the city recognized the urgent need to establish a world-class institution dedicated to education and cutting-edge health care research.

In 2013, the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation made a landmark $50 million commitment over 10 years to build a leading medical school. A year later, Dell Medical School became the first new medical school at a top-tier research university in nearly 50 years, setting the stage for transformative health care innovation.

Dell Medical School is raising the bar for health care in Greater Austin with:

  • Top Talent: Bringing industry-leading, compassionate physicians to Austin who are dedicated to tackling systemic health care challenges and driving transformational change.

Meet Roba

“They’re trying to do something so different from the ground up.” Roba describes Dell Medical School as “rethinking every part of health care.” She imagines a health system that better cares for underserved and under-resourced communities, especially refugees. “My community is the Arab community,” Roba shares. “I would love to use my language in my future practice and give back to those who might feel neglected or vulnerable.” Dell Med’s programming provides meaningful opportunities for Roba to combine her medicine-adjacent passions with her developing specialty skills. “I want to find a way to marry them, and Dell Medical School is the perfect place to do that.”
