Where We Started

Nearly two-thirds of the world’s population lack access to safe, affordable surgery and anesthesia, worsening the burden of disease and injury on underserved communities.

Since 1991, Mercy Ships has provided free, lifesaving surgeries and compassionate care in West Africa, sailing all-volunteer hospital ships to places with few doctors, little infrastructure, and almost no access to essential medical services.

What We Did

With our support, Mercy Ships is meeting the urgent need for medical care in West Africa. Together, we’ve:

  • Expanded their medical capacity and covered fuel costs to keep safe, high-quality surgeries going.
  • Built the world’s first civilian hospital ship, doubling their ability to deliver care across Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Started developing a training center to help local healthcare workers gain critical skills in oral and maxillofacial surgery.
How It Helped

By delivering care to countries with severe shortages of healthcare workers and helping to strengthen local healthcare systems, Mercy Ships makes a lasting impact on thousands of patients every year, completing 3,513 surgeries in 2023 alone.
